Newfoundland & Labrador Travel Information

Check out the following online resources for all your Newfoundland and Labrador travel information and planning needs.

Wildland Tours

Travel with Wildland Tours, and let us introduce you to England's oldest colony and Canada's youngest province. Share the history, open spaces, warmth of our people, and special spirituality of our landscapes. Here we still have eagles and osprey soaring in a clear sky. We have places where the land appears to move, but it's really the backs of the world's largest caribou herd. Along the coast we have places where whirling seabirds are so plentiful they obscure the sun. We take you to where wild salmon leap in crystal clear rivers. Our ocean adventures feature the world's largest gathering of humpbacks sharing the waters with the second largest animals to ever live - the fin whales. Minke whales are so common we call part of our summer travelling route the "Minke Way." We make sure you travel with local folk who can show you what it is like to experience these places and sights. Along the way you sample our unique foods - partridgeberries and bakeapples - and you drink in the freshest air. Travel with Wildland Tours. Share our adventures. We provide holidays you'll always remember.

Atlantic Whales

An on-line catalogue of whale sightings in the northwest Atlantic Ocean. The purpose of this sight is to collect scientifically useful information about this region's whales so this data is available to researchers — and whale enthusiasts — around the world. Whales are an important indicator of oceanic health. The health of their populations tells us a lot about the health of our oceans and the health of our planet.

Audubon Naturalist Society Newfoundland Tour

Audubon Groups: Every year Adventure Newfoundland and Wildland Tours hosts special groups and organizations as they explore Newfoundland and Labrador. Click here to check out the 2009 Newfoundland Tour by the Audubon Naturalist Society or contact Wildland Tours to have them put together a program that is as academic or as fun-filled as you require.

Battle Harbour

After Peary and Bartlett successfully made it to the pole in 1909 they stopped at Battle Harbour on their voyage south to take advantage of the continent's most northerly wireless station. The news spread to the world from Labrador's fishing capital; the pole had been conquered. Later journalists from across the U.S. and Canada flocked north to Battle Harbour for the famous press conference that filled in the details of this epic voyage for a captivated world. By using a Newfoundland Captain, Newfoundland and Labrador sled dogs, and many Newfoundland and Labrador crewmen, Peary had reached the north pole. The epic stories of northern voyages by famous explorers and by Newfoundland fishing families make Battle Harbour a must see destination for northern history enthusiasts. Learn more about Battle Harbour or plan a night's stay here. The historic buildings and inn also provide a wonderful setting for nature lovers seeking to experience the whales and wildlife in the rich coastal waters off Battle Harbour on the Wildland Tours Southern Labrador Adventure expedition.

Canoe Routes of Newfoundland and Labrador (pdf)

For thousands of years the waterways of North America were the primary routes of travel and exploration. The island of Newfoundland is home to more than 11,000 ponds and over 200 large rivers. Huge tracts of forest, rugged Appalachian-chain mountains and open barren lands provide a visually stunning natural landscape for the canoeist to enjoy. Labrador is almost three times the size of Newfoundland and boasts larger rivers plus some of the world's last remote wilderness experiences. NOTE: Wildland Tours does not provide canoeing or kayaking trips. Check the links on this page for the province's leading canoe and kayak operators.

Coastal Campfires

Newfoundland’s scenic beaches and breathtaking views create the perfect backdrop for the magic of an evening campfire. The Parks Service and tour companies like Wildland Tours sometimes offer campfires to visitors. If you aren’t on tour check out Coastal Campfires who offer programmes around the province featuring music by local entertainers together with stories and food.

This site is full of useful information and links for anybody interested in wildlife, Newfoundland, or the world's natural wonders. Compiled by one of Newfoundland's most knowledgeable naturalists.

Land Mammals (pdf)

Part of the adventure of travel involves seeing animals. Whether it is a moose or a vole, people always talk about the wildlife they see in the countryside or near a highway. Local knowledge plus an understanding of animal behaviour and habitats are keys to spotting animals. In addition, animal watchers need to develop a quiet step and a keen, patient eye. Once these have been mastered, the reward is often a great view or photograph of animals at work or play in the Newfoundland and Labrador wilderness.

Maxxim Vacations

Maxxim can provide great air fares for folks interested in a Wildland Tours' program and they provide fly-drive itineraries.

This is just one of the ways a visit to Wild Things or a trip with Adventure Newfoundland or Wildland Tours supports Newfoundland and Labrador.

Newfoundland and Labrador Night Sky

The Newfoundland and Labrador night sky is one of the unexpected highlights of a vacation in Canada's most easterly province. The night sky a few miles (or kilometres) from St. John's is darker and shows more stars and planets than almost anywhere else in North America or western Europe. "This is one of the benefits of living in such sparsely populated areas," says tour guide Mark Tsang. "We get amazing auroras from fall to spring and our visitors can't get over the numbers of stars and even distant galaxies you can see here."

Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism

Here you will find the accommodations, attractions and adventures, tours, festivals, and craft shops for each of the province's five tourism regions: Western, Central, Eastern, Avalon, Labrador.
